3D Printing

 3D PRINTING

First, I inserted a canvas to my fusion360 to outline the design that I want.
Following the steps shown below:

After inputting the image, click “create sketch”, select the same plane as image, select

(fit point spline).

Using the fit point spline, I outline the pattern of my image that I would like the extrude, as shown below.

I then finish sketch and extruded my sketch to 6mm extrusion

Create sketch and sketch a circle of 32mm diameter, 5mm extrusion, fillet top of the extruded circle to 1mm

I wanted pillars to my design as well to make it look like a pavilion, so I had to sketch circles on the base and extrude it out. Thus, using the circular pattern found in “create”, I drew 1 circle and circular pattern to the plane at the base. Looking like the images shown below.

Extrude the small circles to 40mm (higher than figure), to make it look like pillars.

Now to make it look like a pavilion, I decided to add a dome sitting on top of the pillars. To add the dome at the top, click “create sketch” à “create” à “arc” à “3-point arc”. Using the 3-point arc, this is what I sketched.

Now to make it into a dome, I used the revolved function and revolved this to 180degrees to get what is shown below.

When doing the revolve, remember to put operation to join instead of new body.

To cut a hole in the middle, I will make another arc to draw an inner semi-circle to cut the and make a hole.  Using the same type of arc, 3-point arc, I joined the inner edge of the small circles and made an arc.

I then revolve it and cut out the part to make a hole, looking like the image below.
Note: To cut, remember to change the operation status to cut instead of new body.

Finally, my final product!!!

This design could not be easily made as it has a dome at the top which could not be designed using a laser cutter, and the couple is in the middle of the pavilion, surrounded by pillars so it would be difficult to use a laser cutter to produce this design.

Reflection:

In this activity, the task is to design and make something that can only be 3D printed. So after much considerations, I figured out that this design can only be 3d printed, as it had a done at the top and the figure is between pillars which would be difficult to laser cut and placed together.
The interesting part for me in this task was about using the supports for my object. It is quite interesting that cura app is able to identify the points which needs supports. Additionally, I think this task is useful for the project in CP5070, because in CP5070, we are to be able to make ideas into reality compared ICPD in semester 1, thus 3D printing is giving us another alternative to make our product.
I used to think that designing a 3D printable object is difficult and brain-wrecking however after being able to do this project on my own, I now have more confidence in designing my groups ideas.
